Special Education Initiative
Through its support to special education initiatives, Vision-Aid aims to facilitate better awareness
amongst school teachers and educators in under-served areas of India, about the causes and effects of
visual impairment in school children and how they can help such children to perform to their fullest
potential.
Partnership with NIVH
In Nov, 2004 with our support, our partners in Vizag in collaboration with the Govt. of India's National
Institute for the Visually Handicapped and working in close cooperation with several other regional
organizations, Vision-Aid offered a comprehensive five day free training program for school teachers in
the Vizag region. The participants were drawn from a range of schools representing both the rural and
urban schools in the region.
The program ran from Nov 23rd to 27th and was aimed to be an Orientation Course for Teachers in
Regular Schools for facilitating integration of Visually Impaired children. We are happy to report that
46 school teachers from both urban and rural schools participated in the course. The feedback
from them regarding the course has been very positive and many teachers felt that this course was an
"eye opener" for them in terms of how they can help visually impaired children integrate into their
classrooms.
The five day workshop provided the participants with perspectives on the subject of integration from a
medical , social and academic perspective. Eminent speakers from the areas of Vision Rehabilitation, Eye
Care, Special Education and Social Welfare volunteered their time to participate in this "Teach the
Teacher" initiative.
Mr. A.K.Mittal, Regional Director, NIVH has expressed his grateful thanks to Vision-Aid, its partners and to
all the facilitators , who have helped to make this course a success. For a full text of Mr.A.K. Mittal's
