Vision-Aid and Children

Vision-Aid firmly believes that visually impaired children are one of the most significant
beneficiaries of Vision Rehabilitation programs. Many of our programs are especially tailored to
focus on this vulnerable segment of under-served regions. Programs range from Vision Screening
outreach in schools to comprehensive child vision rehabilitation programs at the center, where our
trained Low Vision Rehabilitation specialists work with children to help them cope with vision loss
and regain their confidence and independence. Vision-Aid also keeps in touch with local school
and district education officers to offer
special education programs for school teachers to make
them aware of how they can better help visually impaired children integrate into the classroom.

In the spring of 2006, Vision-Aid has launched its out-reach program into the primary schools of
Visakhapatnam. The first school to be visited in this program was the Achyutarama Pathasala
primary school of Visakhapatnam, India. The Vision-Aid team included optometrist, optician
helper and center volunteers. A total of 203 students were screened with Snellen Charts and
Retinoscope .24 students with need possible vision correction were  identified and asked to
follow up with a visit to the Vision-Aid Center along with their parents. Two of the children were
later determined as having low vision and were provided with optical low vision devices. The
remaining children who came in for appointments went through a fundus exam and refraction nd
were prescribed normal spectacles. Similar screening in other area schools is planned in coming
months.

In July 2005, Vision-Aid Vizag Center conducted a special evaluation camp for the CDC

school children from Salur.
At that first camp, 23 school children of Salur with vision problems
were brought to our center and treated over a two-day period. This special camp was a great
success and generated much interest both via word of mouth and in the media in all the
